Public Sector IT Trends

Managing Information Technology in the public sector is difficult in the best of times. Whether a manager is a career civil servant or an exempt class appointee; a mid-level manager or a State CIO, it is important to take careful note of information technology trends in both the public and private sectors.

A number of factors are generally faced by all public sector IT managers. Included are an aging workforce; critical applications in need of replacement; centralization and consolidation issues such as server consolidation; increasingly complex security issues and the view of finance officers and legislatures toward IT budgets.

We will explore the relationship between politics, governance, budgeting, procurement processes and IT trends. How much of the job of IT manager requires business knowledge, how much is technical and what is the right mix to get the job done right?
