.NET versus J2EE for Executives and CIOs

Why do CIOs care about .NET versus J2EE? Should that debate be left to the architects? 78% of CEOs believe integrating business and technology is fundamental for innovation. To be responsive to changing business requirements, IT needs to deliver flexible systems. Does the selection of .NET versus J2EE affect the ability of IT to be flexible and responsive? Can my organization use both of these technologies in an integrated architecture?

.NET is a collection of products and J2EE is a standards specification. A true comparison would be .NET versus a J2EE implementation such as WebSphere. Some of the considerations that affect flexibility, time to deliver and application reliability are:
security
ease of development
administrative cost
support for standards
platform choice
enterprise service bus
governance

In this discussion, we will provide comparisons of .NET versus the J2EE implementation addressing the topics above.
