International Institute of Business Analysis

Promoting Effective Business Analysis

The most essential measure of success of a software solution is the fulfillment of the end users’ need. Regardless of the quality of development or the sophistication of the information technology solution, if the end user requirements are not fulfilled, the project will not succeed. This success can only be achieved through the application of effective business analysis techniques.

The mission of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) is “to develop and maintain standards for the practice of business analysis and for the certification of its practitioners.” In order to fulfill its mission, the IIBA has created the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK). In addition, the IIBA plans to enhance the established standards through education, research, and the sharing of effective tools and techniques.

This session will consist of two parts:
Part 1 – Impact of Effective Business Analysis on IT Projects: An introduction to the important role business analysis plays throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
Part 2 – IIBA Knowledge Area Overview: An overview of the six IIBA knowledge areas and the best practices promoted by the IIBA for each area.

The six knowledge areas include:
Enterprise Analysis
Requirements Planning and Management
Requirements Gathering
Requirements Communications
Requirements Analysis and Documentation
Requirements Implementation

Consider the following questions:
1. Do your business analysts lack the skills necessary to effectively collect and/or document end user requirements?
2. Does your IT staff spend a significant amount of resource time on software product rework and maintenance?
3. Is your end user community challenged when faced with the task of reviewing and approving business requirements?
4. Is your development community challenged when faced with the task of converting business requirements to technical system specifications?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then this session is for you.
