Shared Services Initiatives in Pennsylvania – Tackling the Big Issues in IT

This session will present how a large enterprise can transform their IT Operations to an On Demand Model that will provide an increased level of customer service and to more quickly react and adapt to changing business and customer requirements at lower costs.

In March 2004 executives at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the nation’s largest healthcare delivery providers, concluded that its IT management system and supporting infrastructure were an impediment to future growth and responsive customer service. As the largest employer in Western Pennsylvania with more than 39,000 employees and over 1,000 servers installed at 20 locations, UPMC realized that its systems and critical databases were deployed in disparate technology silos that sub-optimized utilization, trapped useable capacity, and contributed to escalating IT costs. A growing proportion of IT resources were allocated to daily problem-solving activity relying on manually intensive processes that further increased resource requirements and costs. These complexities limited UPMC’s ability to dynamically adapt to changing business requirements, and the organization found it increasingly difficult to respond to expansion opportunities in a cost-effective manner.

In response to these challenges, UPMC and IBM have signed an eight-year joint development agreement that will evolve UPMC’s capabilities in the following areas:

-A technology transformation, including a complete re-engineering of the IT infrastructure, to keep pace with constant growth and demand for new systems. Much more than server consolidation, IBM will be applying the world’s most advanced computing technologies within an ITIL framework and enhanced governance structure. The new infrastructure will integrate autonomic technologies, extensive automation of systems management and provisioning processes, server and data storage virtualization, and much more.

-Strategic initiatives to enable new solutions and applications that leverage the utilization of medical research information and improve the delivery of care to patients.

These initiatives will address two of the largest problems facing healthcare today – quality delivery and increasing costs. Over the next three years UPMC IT Services will leverage IBM’s Component Infrastructure Roadmap to begin the transformation of UPMC’s IT infrastructure – including organization, processes, software solutions, and hardware platforms into an On Demand Operating Model (ODOM). The resulting infrastructure will enable the organization to better adapt to changing business workloads. UPMC will enhance its flexibility and responsiveness while building a new foundation for continued IT innovation and leadership in the healthcare industry.
