"Metro Scale Broadband Wireless Networks for Public Safety and Community Use"

Evolving from hotspots to citywide hotzones covering hundreds of square miles, Citywide and Metro scale broadband wireless networks are a reality today. Several cities and municipalities have already begun massive scale deployments, with hundreds more trying to decide how to best approach and evaluate their own initiatives. With the growing adoption of 802.11 based wireless mesh Networks, 802.16 WiMax standards, 3G CDMA/1X and UMTS networks, there are numerous Infrastructure, Application, and Business Model issues that should be considered. This presentation will highlight how to address privacy concerns and security issues, how to leverage common network infrastructures to support multiple uses including: Public safety, municipal applications such as automated meter reading and SCADA control, as well as public use either as a economic development catalyst or to provide underserved citizens with broadband access. We will introduce the presentation audience to the state of Metro scale wireless networks today, and actual case study based examples of how cities and municipalities are addressing the possibility of creating Metro scale broadband wireless networks over their entire jurisdiction. Over the past 18 months, Lee has been working with several cities and municipalities in designing and deploying citywide metro scale broadband wireless hotzones, including the City of Lompoc CA, Chaska MN, Cerritos CA, and Corpus Christi TX, which is planned to be over 146 square miles upon full deployment. In addition, Lee is actively working with numerous cities and municipalities on prospective projects with Pronto Networks and their partner ecosystem. Pronto Networks carrier-class integrated product solution is an open, standards-based wireless service delivery platform that enables operators and system integrators to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy wireless broadband networks to deliver new value-added services.
